In the footsteps of the leader of informal art

If Jean Fautrier is considered as a pioneer of informal art, he is also a man with an eclectic background. His style, between realism and abstraction, knows a turning point after an imposed artistic pause. Indeed, for lack of means, Fautrier had to leave Paris at the end of the 1920s to become an alpine ski instructor. He kept painting and sculpting while trying new techniques as soon as he returned to Paris. He probably had been influenced by his experience in the mountains, by his literary friends’ ideas like Paul Eluard or Francis Ponge, or by the destructions during the Second World War.

By using a very specific clay that characterizes his style, Fautrier’s works suggest images, emotions, stories.
